CAMARGUE, FRANCE. Tuesday, 25th of August 2015. Peace and nature turned into tourist enclaves. We have reached the point of declaring natural parks or protected zones as the only way to maintain autochthonous flora and fauna as pure as possible. It’s so sad. It’s disheartening that human race has devastated nature only for the sake of our selfish enjoyment. Destroy to build. And then, animal species (like us) are expelled from their home because they bother us. We disturb them so that they leave. Since, without permission, we have declared it our territory. And they can feel it so they escape. They run away before we kill them. Because they are wiser than us and, in spite of not possessing the reasoning (dis)ability, they know that we are the most predator species alive. And those remaining few natural areas around us, those that have escaped the clutches of «civilisation», we decide to protect them. Save them from ourselves. Because only a few places remain untouched and they are unique. Just like all of the other places used to be but we already extinguished them, in fact.
Walking through these parks is sadness and beauty. Because the other places are not natural anymore. Because there are a few sites around us where nature still reigns. Empordà Wetlands in Catalonia and the Natural Park of Camargue in the South of France are small paradises where time stops and the air oozes peace and harmony. Inhabited by goldfinches, badgers, flamingos, deers, river eels, otters, frogs and mosquito’s clouds, the river sediments of Muga and Roine are the perfect natural realm for these and other species that, just like Louise and Thelma, simply try to survive in the wild.
